The Art Series Bundle – Outdoor Fun Central Outdoor Weekly Programming and Reflection Diary includes a coordinated set of resources created to support intentional programming, reflective practice, and day-to-day organisation in outdoor learning environments within Early Childhood Education and Care. At the centre of this bundle is the Central Outdoor Weekly Programming and Reflection Diary, which is supported by free Butler Method training to help educators understand how to document planning, reflection, and professional decision-making in ways that clearly demonstrate the Cycle of Planning in outdoor contexts.

To complement this training, educators can also access the article 50 Ways to Use a Notebook as an Early Childhood Educator, offering practical and flexible ideas for using the included notebook to record children’s voices, outdoor observations, reflective thinking, and informal planning notes throughout the day.

For educators seeking deeper professional learning, the Cycle of Planning Professional Development Training provides further guidance through detailed examples and guided walkthroughs, showing how planning and reflection can be strengthened using Butler Diaries programming tools in real-world outdoor practice.

Step-by-step support is also available through the dedicated Weekly Programming and Reflection Diary Training which covers all four of our Weekly Programming Diaries, ensuring educators feel confident using the Diary consistently and purposefully within their setting.

Together, the resources and training included in this Art Series bundle offer practical, educator-focused support to reduce overwhelm, strengthen reflective practice, and keep outdoor programming organised — without adding to documentation workload — while enjoying a cohesive and visually engaging Art Series design. FAQ

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions

The Outdoor Programming Diary ensures intentional teaching does not stop at the door. We often received feedback that the outdoor space was being used to just let children out to run and while this is incredibly important, burning energy should not be confused with a lack of intentional teaching. The person opening and setting up in the morning will often not have time to go inside and check each individual room’s program to see what activities would benefit the children outdoors and so sets up the yard in a random fashion. The Outdoor Programming Diary ensures the outdoor space is as intentional and inclusive as the indoor environments.

The Outdoor Programming Diary is designed for those running under the Early Years Learning Framework who have shared outdoor spaces across rooms or age groups.

No, the Central Weekly Programming and Reflection Diary is designed to be used per outdoor space rather than per room. Each room would contribute to the planning in the Outdoor Programming Diary and whoever is setting up the yard in the morning would refer to the program. This creates an outdoor space that promotes intentional teaching and makes this obvious for Assessment and Rating.

"Each diary that we use is laid out in such a way that ALL compliance and record keeping is there - it simply needs to be filled out - each individual diary ticks all the compliance boxes - all the educators have to do is fill them out - it is really simple and easy to understand - This ensures everything is easy to find and on show for spot checks etc. Also no need to go back and fill in missing gaps as everything is there."

Common feedback that we hear is that our Diaries keep everything is one place. With the pressure of Assessment and Rating and so much paperwork, it can make staying organised difficult. We reduce compliance confusion and support you in keeping everything together - particularly handy now with reduced time notices before A&R now in effect.
